eSIM basics

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM that's built into your phone as software instead of a plastic card. You buy a plan, scan a QR code, and it downloads in about a minute — nothing to post or swap. More in What is an eSIM?.

How is it different from my normal SIM?

It does the same job — connecting your phone to a network — but it's delivered digitally and can hold several plans at once. You can switch between them in settings without ever opening a SIM tray.

Is a Travinger eSIM right for me?

If you're travelling and want data without roaming bills or hunting for a local SIM, yes. Our eSIMs are data-only, so you keep your usual number for calls and texts and use the eSIM for internet.

What does “data-only” mean?

It means the plan gives you mobile internet but not a phone number for regular calls or SMS. You can still call and message over the internet with apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime, or keep your home SIM active for calls.

Before you buy

Is my device compatible?

Most phones, tablets and laptops from the last few years are — and they must be carrier-unlocked. Check yours in seconds on our Compatible Phones page.

What do I need to get started?

A compatible, unlocked device; a valid email address (that's how your eSIM arrives); and a Wi-Fi connection to install it before you travel.

How much data should I buy?

As a rough guide: light use (maps, chat) is about 500 MB–1 GB a week; regular browsing and social is around 1 GB a day; heavy streaming can use several GB a day. When unsure, size up — you can always add another plan.

Buying and receiving your eSIM

How do I buy a plan?

Choose your destination and data amount on our Destinations page, then check out. It takes about a minute.

How and when will I receive it?

By email, usually within a few minutes of a successful payment. Your email contains the QR code and setup instructions — there's nothing to ship.

I didn't get my email — what now?

Check your spam or promotions folder and confirm the email on your order. Still nothing? Contact us with your order number and we'll resend it.

Installing your eSIM

How do I install it on iPhone?

On Wi-Fi, open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code and scan the code from your email. Label it “Travinger” and set it as your data line. Full steps on our eSIM Setup page.

How do I install it on Android?

Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Pixel/stock: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM. Scan the QR from your email and follow the prompts.

What if I can't scan the QR code?

Choose “Enter details manually” and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your confirmation email.

Should I install before or after I travel?

Before — at home on Wi-Fi, a day or two ahead. Installing early is free; your plan only starts once it connects at your destination.

Activating and getting connected

When does my plan start?

Your validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination — not when you install it. So a delayed trip won't waste any days.

Do I need to turn on data roaming?

Yes, and it's safe. Turn Data Roaming on for the Travinger line so it can join local networks — you're roaming on your Travinger plan, not your home carrier's. Turn roaming off on your personal SIM to avoid its charges.

How do I keep my own number while using the eSIM?

Modern phones run two lines at once (dual SIM). Keep your personal SIM as the default for calls and texts, and set the Travinger eSIM as your data line.

It's not connecting when I arrive — what do I do?

Give it a few minutes to find a network, make sure the eSIM is your selected data line with roaming on, then toggle Airplane mode or restart. See Troubleshooting for more.
