FAQ
An eSIM is a SIM card that's built right into your phone — a small chip instead of a plastic card you slot into a tray. You buy a plan, scan a QR code, and your phone downloads it in about a minute. There's nothing to post, insert, or swap.
Digitally, by email. Moments after checkout we send your QR code and activation details to your inbox — usually within a minute or two. Nothing ships, and there's no waiting for the post.
Only for the install. You need a working connection (Wi-Fi is easiest) to download the eSIM onto your phone. Once it's installed it provides its own data at your destination, so you won't need Wi-Fi after that.
Install it before you fly, on Wi-Fi at home — a day or two ahead is ideal. Your plan's days don't start until it connects to a network at your destination, so setting up early costs you nothing.
It depends how you travel. As a rough guide: light use (maps, chat, email) is around 500 MB to 1 GB a week; regular use with browsing and social media is about 1 GB a day; heavy streaming and video calls can use several GB a day. When in doubt, size up — you can always add another plan.
Over 200 destinations. We have single-country plans and wider regional plans covering Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and more. Browse them all on our Destinations page.
Most phones from the last few years are — iPhone XS / XR (2018) and newer, plus most flagship Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and Google Pixel 3+. The quickest way to be sure is our Compatible Phones list, or look for an “Add eSIM” option in your phone's settings.
Yes. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked to use another network's eSIM. If you bought it outright it's usually already unlocked; if it came on a contract, your carrier can unlock it — often for free once the contract is up.
No — an eSIM installs onto a single device and can't be copied or moved to another phone or tablet the way a plastic SIM can. If you want data on a second device, buy a separate plan for it.
Yes — this is one of the best parts. Modern phones run two lines at once (dual SIM), so you keep your everyday number for calls and texts and use the Travinger eSIM for data. Both work side by side.
It depends on the model. Some phones allow two active lines in total, while others support several eSIMs alongside a physical SIM. Open your phone's SIM settings to see how many active lines it allows and switch on the ones you need.
Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code, then scan the code from your email. Label it “Travinger”, set it as your data line, and turn on Data Roaming for that line. There's a full walkthrough on our eSIM Setup page.
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. Pixel and stock Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → “Download a SIM instead?”. Scan the QR from your email, set it as mobile data, and enable Data Roaming. See the eSIM Setup guide for the details.
You can install it by hand instead. On the same “Add eSIM” screen choose “Enter details manually” and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code printed in your confirmation email.
Each QR code installs once. If you've already added the eSIM, don't scan it again — just switch it on in your SIM settings. If it never installed and still fails, try manual entry, and if that doesn't work contact us and we'll sort it out.
Your validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination — not when you install it. Each plan shows its exact data allowance and number of days on the product page (for example, 5 GB over 30 days).
No. Install it anywhere with Wi-Fi — usually at home before you leave. It simply waits, and goes live once you arrive and connect to a local network.
Yes — and it's safe. Data Roaming has to be on for the Travinger line so it can connect to local networks abroad. You're roaming on your Travinger plan, not your home carrier's, so it won't trigger home-carrier fees. Tip: turn data roaming off on your personal SIM to avoid its charges.
In your phone's cellular settings you choose which line handles data. Set the Travinger eSIM as your data line while you travel, then switch back to your personal SIM when you get home. Your calls and texts can stay on your normal number the whole time.
Travinger eSIMs are data-only, so they don't include a number for regular calls or SMS. Keep your normal SIM active for those, or call and message over the internet with apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram or iMessage using the eSIM data.
Yes. Turn on your phone's Personal Hotspot and share the eSIM's data with a laptop, tablet or travel companion, just like any mobile connection. Hotspot use draws from the same data allowance.
Full local speed. Your eSIM connects to trusted local 4G/5G networks — the same ones residents use — so speed depends on the network and coverage where you are, not on the eSIM itself. In good coverage you'll get the same performance as a local SIM.
You can see usage in your phone's settings — on iPhone under Settings → Cellular, and on Android under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs / Data usage (look at the Travinger line). Resetting the counter when your plan starts keeps the figure accurate.
Your data simply stops — there are no surprise overage charges. To keep going, top up your plan from your Travinger account to add more data, or buy another plan and install it the same way; it activates in minutes. You don't need to delete the old eSIM first.
Often, yes. Keep the profile installed and you can usually reuse it for the same destination by adding a new plan — no reinstall needed. Just don't delete the eSIM, because a QR code can't be downloaded twice.
Barely. An eSIM uses about the same power as a physical SIM. Running two lines at once (dual SIM) can use a touch more, but the difference is small.
You can pay with major credit and debit cards, plus PayPal and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay — whatever's easiest at checkout.
First check your spam or promotions folder and confirm the email address on your order. Still nothing? Contact us with your order number and we'll resend your QR code right away.
Because an eSIM is delivered digitally, a plan that's already been installed or activated generally can't be refunded. If you bought the wrong plan and haven't installed it yet, or your eSIM won't work and we can't fix it, get in touch and we'll make it right. Full details are on our Refund Policy page.
Run through these quick checks: Travinger is selected as your data line; Data Roaming is on for it; give it a few minutes to find a network; then toggle Airplane mode on and off, or restart your phone. That fixes the large majority of cases — and if it doesn't, we're here to help.
The usual ones: forgetting to turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM; leaving it as a backup line instead of selecting it for data; deleting the eSIM profile (it can't be redownloaded); and using a carrier-locked phone. Install before you fly and you'll dodge nearly all of them.
Yes — arguably more secure than a plastic SIM. Because it's built into your phone it can't be physically removed or swapped, which makes SIM-swap theft much harder. And if your phone is lost, the profile can be deactivated remotely.
Check your phone is compatible and unlocked, install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi (not at the airport), keep your normal SIM for calls and texts, and note your plan's data and validity. On arrival, turn data roaming off on your home SIM to avoid its fees.
We're glad to help — reach us any time through our Contact page. If it's about an order, include your order number so we can jump straight in.
Yes. Alongside fixed-data plans (like 5 GB or 10 GB), many destinations have Unlimited-data options for a set number of days — handy if you'd rather not keep an eye on your usage. You'll see both on the destination's page.
No app required. Your eSIM installs straight through your phone's built-in settings using the QR code we email you — there's nothing extra to download or sign into.
No problem. Your plan's days don't start until the eSIM first connects at your destination, so a delayed departure won't waste any of your validity.
No — a factory reset removes eSIM profiles, and a QR code can only be downloaded once. Try not to reset your phone mid-trip; if it happens, contact us and we'll help.
Wi-Fi Calling is tied to your regular carrier line, not the data-only eSIM. Keep your home SIM active and Wi-Fi Calling works as usual over any internet connection — including the eSIM's data.
It's just the server address your phone uses to download the eSIM when you install manually. You'll find it, along with an activation code, in your confirmation email — copy both into the “Enter details manually” screen.
A single-country plan works in that country. For multi-stop trips, pick one of our regional plans (like Europe or Asia) that cover many countries with one eSIM — the coverage is listed on each plan's page.
Usually not. eSIMs connect to land-based mobile networks, so they won't work over open water or in the air — onboard satellite Wi-Fi is the option there. Your plan resumes as normal once you're back on land in a covered area.
Yes. Just forward them the QR code from the confirmation email and they can install it on their own phone. The plan isn't tied to your account — only to the device it's installed on.
Once it's installed and connected at your destination, the Travinger line shows signal bars and your mobile data works. You can also confirm it's set as your data line in your phone's cellular settings.
